First Discoveries Closing After 2017/2018 School Year
It was communicated on Jan. 4, 2018 that First Discoveries Preschool would come to an end at the conclusion of the 2017/2018 school year. While this has been a difficult decision for the leadership of Eagle Brook, it’s become clear that this is the right decision for our church's future. If you are a parent of a First Discoveries student, please take a moment to read the answers to some questions you may have.
Our mission at Eagle Brook Church is that we are empowered by God to reach others for Christ. As we have continued to grow in our influence as a church, we have had to focus our efforts in an attempt to be excellent at a few things. Weekend services, Kids Ministries on the weekend, Student Ministries, small groups, and care ministries all fit into this core. Although the preschool has been a great part of Eagle Brook for many years, we have had to look at where to best utilize our resources moving forward. Unfortunately, running a preschool is neither replicable at our other sites nor is it sustainable given the resources it takes to run a school with excellence.
This decision was not made quickly nor taken lightly. Ultimately, Eagle Brook’s Leadership Team made the decision after much discussion. The Board is supportive of this decision as well.
There are so many factors that go into this type of decision. Unfortunately, there is never a good time to end a program like this. The Leadership Team knew this decision would affect families, and we wanted to communicate the decision as soon as possible in the calendar year so that people have the opportunity to make plans for the 2018-2019 school year.
YES! One of our priorities every weekend is creating dynamic environments, teaching, and programming designed to impact kids who attend Kid-O-Deo and Elevate. In fact, we have over 5,000 kids attend every weekend! This is one of our top priorities.
No. The preschool will always be a celebrated part of Eagle Brook’s story. There’s nothing that anyone did wrong or should have done differently. This is a decision based on the growing need to be laser-focused on how to best carry out our mission, and in that we can only truly be excellent at a few things. This is simply part of a tough decision that we have to make on where to best put our time, energy, and resources.
No. First Discoveries has always been under the direction and financial leadership of Eagle Brook. Therefore, it involves many leaders and many resources. The Leadership Team has the responsibility to steward these resources to be most effective for our church. Though we believe we have achieved a level of excellence while running the preschool, ultimately, managing a preschool is not what Eagle Brook is best at.
Yes. Tell the teachers that you’re grateful for them. In the next several months, we encourage you to celebrate the amazing impact that this program has had in the past and the long-lasting impact on hundreds of alumni who gained a great foundation through this program. We recognize there is a lot of ownership and emotion around this program. This decision will bring about many different reactions. We know that this is difficult for our preschool families, our attenders, and our staff. We would love your prayers and trust as we finish out the rest of the year. Please pray for the teachers, the leaders of our church, and all those impacted by this decision.
Yes. We would be happy to connect with you if you have more questions or concerns. Please consider contacting Don Graffam, Executive Director of Campus Ministry.

Classes are in session September through May. Vacation days generally follow the White Bear Lake School District calendar.
We also host a Lunch Bunch experience once each month. The day is extended by one hour, so children can bring a lunch and eat together, and then they have time for a book, coloring, and, best of all, time in the gym.
