Have you ever had a time when it felt like someone was trying to bring you down? A co-worker made a point to shine a light on your errors in front of your supervisor. A neighbor badmouths you to other neighbors behind your back. A classmate reports a supposed lack of effort on a group project. Or a friend is spreading false stories about you.
David was all too familiar with this position. But for him, David’s enemies weren’t just out to get his position at work or to simply paint themselves in a better light. They were threatening his very life. They were throwing out death threats and plotting ways to wipe him out—not only from his throne, but from this earth.
But if you scan through this psalm, you won’t be able to detect an ounce of panic—or even a plea for God to save him. In its place, we see a confidence in God that yielded undisturbed peace. The Psalmist shows God’s people that, even in the face of life’s most threatening circumstances, we can find rest if we take refuge in God alone.
As we face our own adversities, let’s follow David’s example and wait quietly before God. With Him as our fortress, we will never be shaken. With Him as our hope, we will see victory. And with Him as our rock and salvation, our souls will find rest.
- What would it look like for you to make God your refuge and fortress today?
- Commit to memory Psalm 62:1, so when you’re tempted to retaliate and take matters into your own hands, you can remember to first turn to God—“I wait quietly before God, for my victory comes from him.”
For Jeduthun, the choir director: A psalm of David.
1 I wait quietly before God,
for my victory comes from him.
2 He alone is my rock and my salvation,
my fortress where I will never be shaken.
3 So many enemies against one man—
all of them trying to kill me.
To them I’m just a broken-down wall
or a tottering fence.
4 They plan to topple me from my high position.
They delight in telling lies about me.
They praise me to my face
but curse me in their hearts. Interlude
5 Let all that I am wait quietly before God,
for my hope is in him.
6 He alone is my rock and my salvation,
my fortress where I will not be shaken.
7 My victory and honor come from God alone.
He is my refuge, a rock where no enemy can reach me.
8 O my people, trust in him at all times.
Pour out your heart to him,
for God is our refuge. Interlude
9 Common people are as worthless as a puff of wind,
and the powerful are not what they appear to be.
If you weigh them on the scales,
together they are lighter than a breath of air.
10 Don’t make your living by extortion
or put your hope in stealing.
And if your wealth increases,
don’t make it the center of your life.
11 God has spoken plainly,
and I have heard it many times:
Power, O God, belongs to you;
12 unfailing love, O Lord, is yours.
Surely you repay all people
according to what they have done.
